MAKING GOVERNMENT RESPONSIBLE means limiting government intervention into matters of personal conscience. Making the federal government responsible also means respecting traditional roles and rights of State governments.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Abortion is not a proper subject for federal action.
DISCUSSION:
Many of those who oppose abortions are in favor of the death penalty. How can people be both "pro-life" and "pro-death?" Many of those who oppose abortion also oppose any form of welfare. How is it possible to insist that a mother--who is unable to care for a child--bring an unwanted child into the world, but then refuse to ensure that the child is properly cared for and educated? Many of those who want to prohibit abortion seem willing to provide an exception in the case or rape and incest etc? If abortion is "murder," why is it acceptable in some instances but not in others? In the interest of philosophical consistency, I believe that any state law enacted to limit abortion should also include a provision (a) banning the death penalty and (b) obligating the State to provide funding for the care and education of any child that it requires a mother to bring into the world against her wishes.
